Six Methods That Work For Getting More People To Opt-in To Your Newsletter

subscribe opt in form for newslettersKeep in mind that when new people come to visit your site, you must try to get them on your opt-in newsletter list or ezine! The reason for this is that they will be giving you permission to get in contact with them any time you want to inform them of what you are doing or what you can offer them.

You do not want to post a link that states you have a “free newsletter”. Your visitors don’t care! You have to carefully plan and place a box for your opt-in that will reel new customers and clients into your business and free newsletter.

You also need to keep in mind that the bottom of the page is not where your box needs to be. At the moment, research is showing that the ideal spot for the opt-in box is the at the top of the page in the right corner. Bold and Clear!

The following are six easy things that will help your opt-in box attract more people and get you more signups than you have before.

1. A HEADLINE that draws attention

Keep in mind that people online will SKIM your page and won’t read every word. Your headline just might be the ONLY part of the page they actually read, and they will decide whether or not to sign up based on it. Don’t waste your time by making your headline say “free newsletter” or worse yet… “Get on our mailing list!” Instead of doing that, explain what exciting item or knowledge your customers will get out of the newsletter. For instance:

“Do You Want To Increase Your SALES Dramatically?”

“Find Out How To Lose Weight And Keep It Off”

“The Secrets You Need To Know If You Want To Make A TON Of Money Writing Novels”

2. Write A Desription That Is Exciting

Put a lot of effort into writing a description for your newsletter that is exciting! Be sure to keep in mind that your customers only want to know what they will get out of it. Be sure to explain what you are going to do, and explain what they are going to get. For instance, give them simple tips, write how-to articles, let them know secrets that only insiders know, and tell them about resources they can get for free. Try to make your description at least 15 words long and no more than 30.

3. A Space For The Person’s First Name

Obtaining an individual’s name to put in your emails to them will let you personalize the newsletter. For instance, if I signed up for your newsletter, it would come into my inbox and say, “Dear Ali…” The email’s subject might even be, “Free hints and tips for Ali”. Why is this important? Research has show that including a person’s name in the subject of the email improves the chances that the person will actually open the email up by 60%.

The issue with this is that a lot of people do not want to give out their full name on the internet. Because of this, simply have a field for the person’s FIRST name. Studies have shown that websites that only ask for a person’s first name will get more names than sites that ask for a full name. (Usually you don’t need a person’s last name anyway.)

4. A Space Where They Can Put Their EMAIL ADDRESS.

A lot of individuals have backup e-mail addresses that are primarily used for promotions and newsletters they don’t want. This issue with these kinds of e-mail addresses is that they are usually a service like Hotmail or Yahoo. These kinds of e-mail services filter heavily, so your email may never even be seen by the person who gave you their address.

This is why you ask your customers for their primary e-mail address. Shockingly, if you ask them to type in the e-mail address they use most often, you will recieve addresses that are of higher quality. (You also won’t have to deal with e-mails being undeliverable as often.) If you recieve a lot of bounce-back, some spam filters will red flag you.

5. Have A BUTTON That State “Sign Up” Or “Subscribe”

Don’t make the form so confusing that your customers do not know where to click after they put in their first name and primary email address. Try to avoid using links that say things like “submit form”.

6. State The PRIVACY POLICY

A lot of people are scared of getting more spam, so put their minds at ease. Don’t allow them to wonder where their e-mail address is going to go after they enter it. Tell them your privacy policy right next to your opt-in button. The privacy policy I use is “I will never rent, sell, share, or trade the e-mail you enter with anyone else.”

(You can use that if you like it.) DON’T hide your privacy policy behind a link because that looks suspicious to a lot of people. Actually, some states in the U.S. now require you to say what your privacy policy is in the same area of your opt-in, and I would recommend you do this no matter where your business is located. You will also see a larger amount of opt-ins if you include a privacy policy.
